One gold and a stack of great performances: Our UK Corporate Games experience

After a visit to the sweltering Mexico City for the World Corporate Games last year, Nottingham might be seen as a little less exotic, but that did not detract from the enthusiasm of the team from Mexichem Specialty Compounds for the UK Corporate Games which were held last month (6th - 9th July).

Mexichem sent a strong squad of 36 employees, hailing from four sites in the UK, to compete in a wide range of disciplines.

The seven sports the Mexichem team entered in were open water swimming, doubles tennis, cycling, running, doubles badminton, football 6’s and golf.

From the University of Nottingham to Nottingham Tennis Centre, venues all over the city were brought together when teams of workers from around the UK convened to battle it out - needless to say, the competition was intense. Some of the big boys, such as Vodafone, entered a team of over 200 athletes, so while Mexichem was by no means minnows in the context of the Games, we were faced with some stern tests!

The teams were made up of employees from Wavin Doncaster, Wavin Chippenham, Specialty Compounds and Vinyl Compounds, and it is only natural to tell you about our gold medal first. Adam Watford recorded an outstanding first place in the open water swimming event to secure our only medal of the Games, but one which we are immensely proud of! Adam builds on his bronze medal in the triathlon at the World Corporate Games, when Darren Newton took a very credible 34th spot in the same event.

Despite missing out on the podium, we were placed well in our other sports too; coming 4th in badminton, 4th in the men’s 10k, 4th and 7th in the cycling road race, and 5th in the doubles tennis.

So with these excellent results under our belts, we ended up a brilliant 13th in the medal table overall. What encapsulated the event for many was the high level of team spirit which the Mexichem group showed, all supporting each other in their respective events. The event also offered an opportunity for employees from different sites to get to know each other.

We look forward to the next Corporate Games, which will be held in Stoke-on-Trent from the 21st to 24th June, 2018, and are planning to send another talent packed team.

Dan Delisle, general manager at Mexichem Specialty Compounds, commented: "With its two football grounds and cricket stadium nestled by the River Trent, Nottingham is very much a sporting city, and made an excellent host for the UK Corporate Games. It was a fantastic occasion, and events were contested with great enthusiasm, but also with empathy for fellow participants, and an excellent team spirit. Good performance in our every day roles comes down to teamwork, and that's what Mexichem brought to the UK Corporate Games. A big well done to everybody who took part in the event, those that came to support, and to Adam Watford for his wonderful achievement."
